For
our move from California to Pennsylvania, we decided to take
a cross-country drive. We wanted to keep our car, and since we
didn't have to rush (Maria's job at Villanova starts in August), we
figured it would be a great opportunity to see the country. However, one
thing I learned in my four previous cross-country drives - each of which
was completed in 5 days, driving on the interstates - is that you don't
actually get to see much of anything when you drive on the
interstate highways. So we decided to take route 50, which follows
along the old Santa Fe trail and the route of the Pony Express. Most of
the way it's a two-lane road, and it serves as the main road in literally
hundreds of small towns, so it's the way to go if you're not in a
hurry. Also, it took us close to Denver, where Maria's folks live now,
so we could take a break there for a while. Route 50 also goes through
St. Louis, where Maria had a 4-day conference to attend in mid-June,
providing another nice break along the way. |
