Drive Around the World
I’ve added a link to “Drive Around the World” in my blogroll. When I was at Ask Jeeves, I worked with Nick, the main person behind the Drive Around the World team. He’s an amazing guy, and he owns probably a dozen Land Rovers of various vintages. Among them is one of only two functioning amphibious Land Rovers left in the world (I think only 17 were built – the drive shaft has a propeller at the end of it, and it has a vertical exhaust pipe, like a diesel truck). A few months before they set out on their current journey he asked me to help design a web publishing system specific to their needs: an easy to use system for getting their photos, journals, etc online, and operating in the context of a low-bandwidth satellite network. They’re doing the drive as a fundraiser for Parkinson’s, and they worked out educational programs with a number of elementary schools, so it wasn’t just for fun. I really wanted to do it, but I just had too many other things going on at the time. But their site is excellent, so obviously they worked out something good. Check it out (the link is to your right).
